Apaches suffer first loss of season

The Tyler Junior College Apaches lost their first game of the season, a 2-1 overtime decision to Richland College in a soccer match on Tuesday night at Pat Hartley Field.

TJC, ranked No. 2 in Division I, is 8-1 on the season. The Thunderducks, ranked No. 1 in Division III, are 8-0. The NJCAA has only D-I and D-III.

"It was a good game, a quality match," TJC coach Steve Clements said. "Richland came to play. ... It was two good teams."

TJC took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute as Thaabit Baartman scored off an assist from Tamar Clayon-Naute. That's the way the score stayed until Richland scored in the 85th minute for a 1-1 tie. The Thunderducks then scored in the sixth minute of overtime for the 2-1 win.

Richland had seven corner kicks to TJC's three. The Thunderducks had 11 shots to Tyler's seven.

On Saturday, TJC claimed a 3-0 win at Paris Junior College. Karsimi Konneh scored two goals, the first was unassisted with the second assisted by Mads Eslund. Jorensky Augustin scored off an assist from Raul Carillo. Goalkeeper Neil Strauber had three saves for the Apaches in the clean sheet.

The Apaches have two more non-conference matches this weekend. On Friday, TJC hosts Johnson County (Kansas) at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Tyler meets Broward (Florida) at noon at Richland College in Dallas.
