Floyd Solomon Wagstaff (1911-2000)

Coach Wagstaff brought to Tyler Junior College a legend as wide as Texas. His basketball teams won 743 games, advancing to the national championship tournament 11 times. His Apaches won two national titles and finished in second place twice. Wagstaff was inducted into five athletic halls of fame and he continues to be a source of inspiration for hundreds of coaches and former students nationwide.

His legacy lives on through the Wagstaff Holiday Classic. A tradition that began in 1953 by the Coach himself. This event was established to give high school teams in East Texas the opportunity to play at Tyler Junior College over the holiday break and to get ready for district play. Coach Wag would be proud of the sportsmanship and competition displayed throughout this year’s classic.
