TJC scores opening wins in soccer

The TJC soccer teams topped off "Meet the Apaches" night with a pair of opening game victories against Jacksonville College on Tuesday at Pat Hartley Field on the Tyler Junior College campus.

In the first match, the Apaches, ranked No. 2 in the nation, defeated the Lady Jaguars 9-0.

The second game was a physical matchup as the No. 4 Apaches downed the Jaguars 2-1.

Both were Region XIV Conference contests.

WOMEN

The Apaches Ladies, the defending national runners-up, put pressure on JC throughout the match.

TJC scored nine goals off of 12 shots with the Lady Jags firing off one shot.

Patricia Estupinan, a sophomore from Canary Islands, Spain, had four goals to lead Tyler.

Maria De La Fuente, a sophomore from Madrid, Spain, added two goals for TJC with Mukarama Addulai, Vickie Adams and Bishop Gorman graduate Sarah Flannelly scoring one goal apiece.

Whitehouse's Sydney Malmstrom (first half) and Ayana Aoyagi (second half) combined for the clean sheet.

"We started slow. We missed a PK (penalty kick)," TJC coach Corey Rose said. "Once we got our first goal we were in control of things."

The Apaches Ladies play host to Blinn at 5 p.m. Friday and Angelina at 5 p.m. Saturday. Jacksonville, which hosts Angelina at 5 p.m. Friday, falls to 1-2.

MEN

TJC took a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Karsimi Konneh and Dion Macfoy-Johnston. Jacksonville's goal was by Guilherme Benites off an assist by Victor Machado.

Carl Koester was in goal for the Apaches.

"One goal is as good as 100 when you win," TJC coach Steve Clements said. "They let us bang around a bit in the game."

Clements was pleased with the first half play and how the team rebounded after giving up a goal.

The Apaches meet Blinn at 7 p.m. Friday and Angelina at 7 p.m. Saturday at Pat Hartley Field with Jacksonville (1-2) hosting Angelina at 7 p.m. Friday.
