TJC outscored Trinity Valley, 16-4, in the final five minutes of the game, to defeat the No. 12 Cardinals, 77-73, on Saturday in a Region XIV basketball game on Leon Spencer Court at Cardinal Gym in Athens.

The victory snapped a five-game losing skid for the Apaches as they improve to 15-10 on the season and 7-8 in Region XIV. TVCC falls to 20-5 and 11-3.

Dariyus Woodson led the Tribe with 27 points, including two shots that tied the contest when the game was up for grabs. The sophomore from Baytown also hit five 3-pointers.

 

Woodson canned a long trey that tied the game at 71-71 with 2:43 showing. After Makhi Dorsey hit two free throws for TVCC to put the Cardinals up 73-71, Woodson came through again with a jumper to knot the game at 73-73 with 2:01 on the clock.

After a block by JJ Louden and a steal from Jacyn Jones-Taylor, the Apaches worked the ball around and BJ Hooper Jr. was fouled and swished both free throws to put TJC up 75-73 with 37 seconds showing.

In next 33 seconds, Tyler played tight defense as TVCC tried a 3-pointer and two additional shots before Louden grabbed the rebound and passed  to Jermontae Hill, who found Woodson all along at the other end of the floor for a bucket with 4.4 seconds showing to clinch the win.

TJC had one of its better shooting starts, moving ahead 46-32 at halftime.

The Cardinals rallied to take a 69-61 lead before Tyler closed the game strong.

Following Woodson on the score sheet for Tyler were Hooper (17), Jonah Nesmith (12), Hill (9), Hudson Anderson (4), Brandon Walker (3), Sammon Johnson (2) and Jones-Taylor (2).

Hitting 3-pointers for Tyler were Woodson (5), Hooper (2) and Nesmith (2).

TJC was 13 of 19 at the free throw line.

Ahamad Bynum led TVCC with 23 points, followed by Devyn Franklin (12), Dorsey (8), Mouhamed Mbaye (6), Braden Wood (5), Phil March (5), Aliou Cisse (5), Denim Johnson (4), Garrett Nuckolls (3) and Ibra Bayu (2).

Bynum had seven 3-pointers, followed by Franklin (2), Nuckolls (1) and March (1).

Trinity Valley was 12 of 14 at the free throw line.

The Apaches return to play on Wednesday, traveling to Kilgore (20-6, 10-5) to meet the Rangers at Masters Gymnasium. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. TJC is next home on Saturday, Feb. 24 against Bossier Parish (4 p.m. start).

The Cardinals are scheduled to travel to Corsicana to play Navarro (14-11, 7-8) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
