With a nice crowd on hand for a Saturday afternoon contest, two old rivals tangled on the hardwood at Wagstaff Gymnasium in Tyler.

Kilgore College, using a physical inside scoring and rebounding attack, took control late in the first half en route to a 74-49 win over Tyler Junior College in a Region XIV Conference basketball game.

The Rangers (15-6, 5-5 Region XIV) used 17 offensive rebounds to swing the game into their favorite. Plus, KC had 45 rebounds to the Apaches' 25.

TJC Coach Mike Marquis, whose team falls to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in conference, said his team did not rebound from its physical road win over Navarro on Wednesday. He credited the Rangers for their offensive rebounding, saying it was the difference in the game.

After the game was tied at 15-15, Coach Robert Byrd's Rangers went on a 16-0 run in the latter part of the first half. The run was topped off by a 3-pointer from Cahmai Crosby for a 31-15 advantage with 7:19 on the clock.

The Apaches stopped the streak when Jermontae Hill swished two free throws at 7:09. Kilgore eventually led 39-28 at halftime.

Tyler pulled within nine points in the second half, but could get no closer. Kilgore's largest lead was 28 points, 73-45.

Willie Williams powered the Rangers with 22 points and 14 rebounds (7 offensive, 7 defensive). Also in double figures scoring were Jamil Muttilib (14 points) and Jamir Turner (13).

Others scoring for KC were Peter McKey (8), Crosby (4), James Mathews (3), KC Udolisa (3), Thomas Hattaway (3), Ike Nwaobi (2) and Kaleb Pouncy (2).

Dariyus Woodson led the Apaches with nine points. He was followed by Hill (8), Brandon Walker (8), Hudson Anderson (8), Jaylen Perry (6),  BJ Hooper Jr. (5) and Sammon Johnson (5).

Hill led the Tribe in rebounding with eight and Walker had three blocks.

TJC was 11 of 21 at the free throw line and 4 of 13 from 3-point (Woodson, 2; Hooper, 1; Perry, 1).

KC was 18 of 27 at the free throw line and 6 of 17 from 3-point (McKey, 2; Crosby, 1; Udolisa, 1; Muttlib, 1; Hattaway, 1).

NOTES: A famous former Whitehouse High School quarterback was in the crowd for the game — not Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, but Congressman Nathaniel Moran (R-Tyler) and his son, Lincoln. ... Several members of the Lindale Eagles basketball team and their Coach Cedeno Clark were on hand. ... Tyler Lions Coach Justin Johnson, a former TJC star, attended the contest.
