Six TJC pitchers combined on a three-hitter and the Apaches had a six-run inning as Tyler Junior College scored a 7-2 over No. 20 McLennan Community College on Monday at Trinity Mother Frances Mike Carter Field.
The win moves Tyler to 21-16 on the season and the Highlanders fall to 22-11. It was the second win by the Apaches over MCC in three meetings. They will play again on April 28 in Waco.
The Highlanders led 2-0 before TJC rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Preston Newberry paced the Tribe with three hits, including a double, with two RBIs. Landry Stamps added two hits and an RBI with Levi Risenhoover hitting a double and knocking in a run.
Adding hits for Tyler were Zack Zavala (1) and Josiah Mackey (1).
Also knocking in runs were Zavala (2), Troy Johnson (1),
Scoring runs were Newberry (2), Zavala (1), Stamps (1), Risenhoover (1), Nico Ruedas (1) and Gabe Flores (1).
Ty Waid hit a solo homer for MCC with Marcus Smith and Deiten Lachance adding singles. Smith had an RBI and Waid scored two runs.
The Highlanders used seven pitchers.
Pitching for TJC were Dillon Davenport (3 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, 1 strikeout), Roman Tolbert (1 inning, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout), Jake White (.2 innings, 0 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 0 strikeouts), Simon Hughes (W, 1-0, 2.1 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, 4 strikeouts), Austin Shirley (1 inning, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 1 strikeout) and Brady Baker (1 inning, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 3 strikeouts).
The Apaches return to Region XIV Conference play on Wednesday, traveling to Bossier City, Louisiana to meet the Bossier City Cavaliers in a 1 p.m. contest.
Then the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday in Tyler. The first game is slated to start at 1 p.m., followed by a 3:30 p.m. game.
The Highlanders meet Hill College in a DH on Wednesday in Waco (noon and 3 p.m.).
