Galveston comeback drops Apaches in opening round
The Tyler Apaches(36-19) dropped their opening game to Galveston(32-23) in the NJCAA Region 14 Regional tournament Thursday night 9-8 at Lee Roy Dryer Field in Brenham, Texas. Tyler led the entire game, including holding an 8-1 advantage going to the eighth inning. The #3 seed Whitecaps were able to rally for 8 runs in the final two frames to get the late inning, come from behind win.
Four Apaches had multihit games lead by Ryan Brown who went 3 for 5 with a run scored and 1 RBI. Levi Risenhoover (2 for 4, 2 runs, 2 RBI), Tyler Ness(2 for 4, 1 run, 2 RBI) and Finn Kaiyala (2 for 4, 2 RBI) also paced the Tyler offense. Tyler starting pitcher, Grayson Murray pitched 6 complete innings giving up just 1 run, scattering 6 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3.
Galveston freshman from Lufkin, Dylan Vinson(3-0) earned the win on the mound for the Whitecaps and sophomore LHP David Irons struck out 2 of the 3 Apaches he faced in the bottom of the ninth to get his 3rd save of the season. Sophomore catcher Evan Aslaksen led the way for Galveston offensively going 3 for 5, including a double, at the plate.
The #2 seed Apaches will play an elimination game against Region 14 North foe, #4 seed Panola(24-28) at 2:00 pm on Friday. Galveston advances to the winners bracket game against #1 seed, host Blinn(38-14) at 6:00 pm.
