TJC Apaches top Richland 2-1 in soccer

In matchup between soccer contenders, the Tyler Junior College Apaches scored a 2-1 win over the Richland College Thunderducks on Tuesday at Pat Hartley Field.

TJC, ranked No. 2 in the nation, is the two-time defending NJCAA Division I champions, while Richland, also ranked No. 2, finished second in NJCAA Division III last year.

TJC (9-1) took a 2-0 halftime lead as the Apaches went up in the seventh minute on a goal by Thaabit Baartman, off a crossing pass from Thomas Windle.

In the 33rd minute, Musa Qongo crossed a pass to Cheick Fofana who netted the goal.

The Thunderducks scored in the 62nd minute as they fell to 7-2 on the season.

Neil Strauber was in goal for the Apaches. Both teams had seven shots on goal, while the Thunderducks had 10 cornerkicks to TJC's two.

TJC will return play on Friday, hosting Johnson County (Kansas) at Pat Hartley Field. The Apaches are set to kickoff at 5 p.m. They will also play on Saturday, traveling to Dallas to meet Broward County (Florida) at 1 p.m. at Richland College.

The Apache Ladies, ranked No. 1 with a 9-0-1 record, are scheduled to play No. 2 Navarro (7-0-1) in a key match on Wednesday in Corsicana. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The TJC women are set to play Johnson County (Kansas) at 7 p.m. Friday at Pat Hartley Field.
