Galveston edges Apaches 3-0 in opening round of Region 14 softball tournament

The Galveston Whitecaps got two home runs to edge the Tyler Apaches 3-0 in the opening round of the Region 14 tournament in Houston on Saturday.  The Apaches were held to just three baserunners in the 7 inning game.  Freshman pitcher, Jenna Johnston, from Langley, British Columbia, struck out six Apaches, walked 2 and allowed just one hit in 7 innings of work in earning the win for the Whitecaps.  The Whitecaps move on in the winners bracket and face Paris tomorrow at 7:30 pm at the San Jacinto Softball Field.  The Apaches play Blinn tomorrow in a consolation bracket game at 2:30 pm.

Both teams were strong in the circle on Saturday, but Whitecaps was just a little bit stronger at the plate in their 3-0 victory over TJC Apaches. Sierra Ouellette started the game for TJC Apaches and recorded 18 outs.

Whitecaps were the first to get on the board in the second when Tallulah Civoniceva hit a solo home run to center field.

Whitecaps scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a home run to center field by Karlie Barba.

Ouellette opened the game for TJC Apaches. They allowed four hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings, striking out nine and walking one. Jenna Johnston opened the game for Whitecaps. They allowed one hit and zero runs over seven innings, striking out six and walking two.

Jolie Bazan went 1-for-3 at the plate to lead TJC Apaches in hits. TJC Apaches turned one double play in the game.

Barba provided pop in the middle of the lineup, and led Whitecaps with two runs batted in. The 3-hole hitter went 2-for-3 on the day. Whitecaps didn't commit a single error in the field. Brooklyn Spencer had the most chances in the field with eight.
